If your child is afraid of the dentist, dental office, and all of the dental tools, we have four suggestions for you! If you do the following things before, during, and after your child’s dental appointment, your child may feel more comfortable, safe, and relaxed in the dental chair:

1. Explain things gently: As you help your child get ready for their appointment, explain what is going to happen in a gentle way and please stay away from talking about the dramatic and worst-case scenarios. Talking about those things will only make your child’s nerves and anxiety worse. If you talk about the treatment like it’s important, acceptable, and needed, they will feel better about being in the hands of the dentist. If you aren’t sure what’s going to happen at the dental office, be honest and encourage your child to ask the dentist any questions once you arrive at the office.

2. Answer questions honestly: It is natural for children to have questions. When your child asks you about their upcoming appointment, give them honest and gentle answers. If your child expects their appointment to go a certain way and it does not happen, they might feel as though the dental office is unpredictable and unsafe.

3. Be there for your child: Sit next to your child throughout the appointment. If you stay right by their side and hold their hand, they will feel safe and comfortable. Also, tell your child that you love them and that you are there for them if they need anything.

4. Praise your child: If you praise and congratulate your child during and after their appointment, they will feel positive vibes at the office and they will feel accomplished in the dental chair.
